Protecting Against Diphtheria
The Department of Education has advised schools that there are currently diphtheria outbreaks in parts of regional and remote Northern Territory, Western Australia and South Australia. There have been no cases identified in Victoria to date.
As some À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ families may be travelling to these areas during the school holidays, and as a recent student group travelled to the Northern Territory, we encourage families to review their daughter’s diphtheria vaccination status if they have recently travelled to, or are planning to travel to, one of these higher-risk areas.
The Department of Health recommends checking vaccination records and speaking with your GP or immunisation provider if you are unsure whether a booster vaccination is recommended, particularly if it has been more than five years since the last diphtheria vaccination.
Vaccination remains the best protection against serious illness from diphtheria. There are no restrictions on travel to these areas based on vaccination status.
Families can check immunisation records through their Medicare online account via myGov, the Australian Immunisation Register, or by speaking with their GP or immunisation provider.
