Year 12
With less than 50 school days left now is the time to revisit our study habits and evaluate what needs to be done to gain success. With this term being very SAC heavy it is easy to feel overwhelmed. The good news is that success doesn’t come from studying for hours without a break – it comes from studying smart. Developing good study habits can help you learn more effectively, reduce stress and improve your confidence.
One of the most important habits is creating a regular study routine. Set aside a specific time each day for schoolwork and stick to it. Studying in shorter, focused sessions is often more effective than leaving everything until the last minute.

Choosing the right study environment also makes a difference. Find a quiet, well-lit space where you can concentrate without distractions. Put your phone on silent or out of reach while studying to help you stay focused. Use the Library space after school to stay in the school mindset if you are easily distracted at home.
Setting realistic goals for each study session can keep you motivated. Instead of saying, “I’ll study Psychology,” try a more specific goal like, “I’ll complete two psych questions on circadian rhythms.” Achieving small goals gives you a sense of progress and encourages you to keep going.
Don’t just read your notes over and over. You must do the hard stuff. Active learning techniques, such as summarising information in your own words, creating flashcards, answering practice questions or teaching the topic to someone else help improve understanding and memory.
Remember to take regular breaks. A short five-to-ten-minute break after 25 to 50 minutes of focused study can refresh your mind and improve concentration. Don’t forget that your brain needs breaks too! Taking short breaks, getting enough sleep, eating well, drinking plenty of water and staying active all help improve concentration and memory.
Finally, don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. If you’re finding a subject challenging, speak to your teacher. Remember, your teachers, classmates and family are all part of your support network, and seeking help is a positive step towards success.
